My 3 year old granddaughter loves this series...I love this one because her patience level is nil, and this book teaches a lesson about waiting withou lecturing.
It certainly is not easy to wait! My girls and I have been waiting for this book since we pre-ordered it in April! For those of you who might be unfamiliar with this series, Elephant and Piggie is a series of easy readers featuring a neurotic elephant and his friend Piggie, who is a nice foil for Gerald. The books are very silly; there is usually a misunderstanding, and quite a bit of comic relief. The text is simple, and the character speak via voice bubbles, using simple language like,"I have a surprise for you!""Yay! What is it?""The surprise is a surprise!""Oh."The illustrations enhance the simple text. Elephant and Piggie are put up against a white background. This allows emphasis to be placed on facial expressions and body language. This is a wonderful tool for helping children understand how a character is feeling.Waiting Is Not Easy is a wonderful entry in the franchise. The snippet of text I shared is from the beginning of the book. Piggie has a surprise for Gerald, and he is very excited. The only problem is that Gerald literally can't deal with waiting, and he gets more and more anxious about the surprise. He groans audibly, and his groan voice bubble even knocks Piggie over. She remains patient with him, and the payoff when the surprise is revealed proves to be worth the wait.My three girls (7,5,5) loved this story. They giggled at Gerald's impatience, and they enjoyed the surprise. The Elephant and Piggie books don't always have a lesson at the end, so I appreciated that this story conveyed the message that good things come to those who wait.I would absolutely recommend Waiting Is Not Easy to preschoolers through children in the early years of elementary school. The voice bubble format makes this an ideal story to act out with an emerging reader. I know that we will continue to enjoy this story, just like the rest of the Elephant and Piggie stories.
Do you like waiting? We think this book is awesome because it is funny! For example, Gerald's GROAN bubbles knock Piggie down. Another reason we like it is because we liked when Gerald yells, "PIGGIE!!!!" We like the ending where Gerald has a surprise for Piggie. When Piggie said, "I cannot wait," we thought, "Oh no! Here we go again!" We think Waiting is not Easy is a great book because it has a great lesson about waiting. You should read Waiting is Not Easy!Written by Ms. Smith's First Graders
Just be warned once you buy your child one of these books, you will eventually have to get the whole set!Not sure what it is about these books, but my daughter is obsessed. I work in education, so I can say that it's very common. Once one of my students reads one book, they cannot wait to read the rest of the series! These are simple easy books with simple graphics. My daughter is a 2nd grader who reads at about a 5-6 level, and she absolutely loves these books. She reads them over and over, and it takes her about 2 minutes to read one full book. Each of these books has a subliminal life lesson as well. They focus on feelings, without making feelings an awkward subject. Highly recommend them, even if your child is an advanced reader...they will still love these.I initally felt like they were a waste of money because they're so easy for my daugter to read, but after I saw how much she genuinely loves them, they were worth every penny. She especially loves reading them to her little cousins and friends. They have a lot of expression (yelling, excited, ALL CAP WORDS, sighing, sadness, etc.) So they help my daughter practice her expressional reading where she reads without trying to speed read or sounding like a monotone robot! :)
It was my first book in the series. My husband wears glasses and hates waiting, so when I accidentally stumbled into the children's section at Strand, I immediately showed the book to him. Then, a few years later, I asked my mom to give a few books to him for his birthday, and we got to finally read them. Well, my husband is, indeed, Gerald, and I am Piggie, and the things that happen to these two friends are pretty much real scenarios from our life. I am honestly excited for children to be reading this, because Mo Willems captures the exasperation and ecstasy of human existence better than any adult writer does.
Mo Willems does a great job addressing children's feeling, relationships and dilemmas from their perspective. (In this case, Piggy has something to share with Gerald but he has to wait for it. Waiting isn't easy but Piggy encourages Gerald to be patient. In the end, Gerald was able to wait and is glad he did.) These are acknowledged and validated while Gerald and Piggy sort things out and come to a satisfactory solution. Enables discussions on many age appropriate levels. The graphics and/or story appeals to my grandchildren aged 18 months to 5 years. My 11 year old granddaughter enjoys reading them to siblings and cousins. However, our discussions on a more nuanced and insightful level.
I cannot believe this book has so many good reviews. It's 50 pages (exaggerated but seems like it while reading it) of some ugly, unanimated man-looking-elephant begging to see a surprise. THATS IT. Page after page of this ugly, unanimated man-looking-elephant WHINING and BEGGING a pig to see a surprise and then he sees it and that's it. I don't want my child reading an example of how to be obnoxious. That should be the title of the book 'How to be Obnoxious'. There's no color, no story line, no moral to the story like the title suggests. Do NOT recommend.
