WOW!!! If you ever wanted the opportunity to vicariously walk in someone else's shoes, this book helps with that process. The essays are easy to read, well-written, informative, and thought provoking. The experiences shared by the writers are candid and honest, allowing the reader to abandon his/her own reality to become enveloped in someone else's world. There were many perspectives that I could relate to, but others that allowed me to see a person of color's perspective from a new lens. I am thankful to Sun Yung Shin for bringing this talented group of writers together for such an important piece of work and I am grateful for the stories that were shared.

A thoughtful amalgam of MN writers tell their stories of how MN avoids, demeans, ignores and dislikes the bigoted, racist, hateful underbelly of racism on a daily basis. A series of intimate looks at how racism affected the lives of bi-racial black, Hispanic, Korean, Chinese peoples in the MN Not-Nice environment to a surprisingly ugly degree. A MUST READ if you are "WHITE" and especially if you think you are "NOT PREJUDICED",

Excellent essays on what a minority experiences in Minnesota, a state that prides itself on its liberal heritage. A state that somehow has viewed itself without prejudice. A state that prides itself on Lake Wobegon without recognizing the cost of that view on minorities. The self-reliance, the enforced distance between neighbors has had a cost on those who aren't like the vast majority. The essays are well-written in most cases, and deserve to be studied with a view to growing the state closer together. And for most of the citizens who don't live in straitened circumstances, a book that is instructional: what it's like to be 'the other."

This book contains several raw, honest, and superb essays from various Minnesotan authors. I picked up this book from the library without knowing much about it and was instantly captivated —so I purchased my own copy.I am a huge fan of Diane Wilson and Bao Phi’s writing and both authors are featured in this book. These essays are truly representative of the POC experience, not just in MN, but cross country. POC or not, I think we can all understand and relate to these writings. This is a book I will continue to reference and recommend.

The content at times was hard to process. I needed time between each story to process what I had just read. It changed the way I see a lot of things in the Minnesota. I learned a lot. Felt my heart break several times but I truly feel like a better more enlightened person for having read these stories. To see the world through the lens of a person who looks different than you is something we should all experience. I highly recommend this book. It has aided so much in my awareness.

This is an excellent book that is sure to open the eyes of everyone who reads it. The stories and essays are written by gifted authors who express themselves with honesty and integrity. It helped educate me on the myriad of experiences that are part of being a "Minnesotan," not just my own very limited perspective. It opens your eyes to the institutional and systemic racism that warps the way we white people experience the world and promises the possibility of a richer, deeper experience of being fully engaged with our neighbor.

Definitely worthwhile. Many perspectives and all good writers!

This collection of essays is important for two significant reasons. The first is the most obvious, which is a candid and powerful view into issues of race (the focus is on Minnesota, but it's applicable for all of us in the U.S., not just Minnesotans). The second is the power, intensity, skill, and variety of approaches of the writers. Other than this being a who's who of established and up and coming writers in the northern state, this book is simply a work of literary art. This is already a must-read for all of us.
